Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy

Do you experience dizziness, vertigo, or imbalance? Have you been looking for a way to get these issues addressed? Vestibular rehabilitation therapy may be the solution for you!

What is the Vestibular System?

Your vestibular system is the sensory system involved in balance and spatial orientation relating to coordinating movement with balance. The vestibular system involves the brain but is also made up of structures found within the inner ear, including the semicircular canals, the vestibule, and the bony labyrinth. Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy involves exercises that can help manage dizziness and balance issues. Though this treatment can take time, it can greatly improve the quality of your life.

What is Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy?

Vestibular rehabilitation therapy is an exercise-based therapy that aims to reduce dizziness, vertigo, and imbalance. Typically a result of inner ear problems, these symptoms may also be a result of mild head trauma or a concussion. Other possible causes of vertigo and dizziness, include low blood sugar, infection, migraines, and stress. Through vestibular rehabilitation therapy, a trained physiotherapist will work with you to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and create a personalized treatment plan accordingly.

Our physiotherapists are also trained in aiding patients with BBPV using the Epley maneuver. This maneuver is a series of head and body movements designed to help treat Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). This condition is caused by displaced calcium crystals in the inner ear. By repositioning these crystals through specific exercises that tilt and turn the head, the maneuver aims to alleviate dizziness and restore balance.

Who Can Benefit from Vestibular Rehabilitation?

Vestibular Rehabilitation is beneficial for people with the following conditions:

  • Vertigo
  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
  • Labyrinthitis
  • Migraine headache
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • Vestibular neuritis
  • Falling risk
  • Ear infection

What Can I Expect During this Treatment?

Depending on the cause of your symptoms, the exercises used during treatment vary. Some exercises may focus on renewing the function of the inner ear by using specific head or eye exercises, focused balance training, or walking exercises. Other exercises may involve more hand-eye coordination, such as throwing a ball from hand to hand at different levels.
